Vintage Dolls - Must-Have Reference Books For Collectors

By Katharine Swan Ask anyone who collects vintage dolls, and they will no doubt be able to show you entire bookshelves full of reference books. Books are important to doll collectors for two reasons. First, the books usually contain important information about the doll companies; and second, the best doll books are resplendent with dozens of color photographs to help you identify your dolls. Not all doll reference books are created equally, however. Photo and printing quality varies between books — especially vintage doll books, which (despite their age) can be excellent resources. Generally, the books that you will find most helpful will be those that provide plenty of pictures and information about identifying characteristics. Below are some doll book titles that every vintage doll collector should own. Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s, by Carol Stover This wonderfully detailed book is a must-have for anyone who collects small dolls. The book has chapters on each of the popular toddler dolls and small fashion dolls: Vogue Ginny, Cosmopolitan Ginger, Nancy Ann Muffie, Madame Alexander Alexander-Kins, and more. The book also includes information for identifying unmarked dolls and clothing. Collectors Encyclopedia of Vogue Dolls, by Judith Izen and Carol Stover Ginny dolls are wildly popular with collectors. This entire book is devoted to describing and photographing the various outfits and changes in the dolls over the years, from the 1940s all of the way to the modern-day Ginny doll. The World of Alexander-Kins, by Patricia Smith Madame Alexanders eight-inch toddler doll, known as Wendy or Alexander-Kins, easily rivaled Ginny in its variety of outfits. Patricia Smiths book offers hundreds of pictures of the different dolls available over the years, as well as a discussion of the changes that took place in the construction of the dolls. Madame Alexander Collectors Dolls, by Patricia Smith Although this early doll reference book contains mostly black-and-white photographs, it still offers one of the most comprehensive pictorial references of Madame Alexander dolls. The book is organized by year, documenting the way the dolls and outfits changed year-to-year. Although the book is currently out of print, it can be found by searching sites that sell used books, such as eBay, Half -dot- com, and Amazon -dot- com. Madame Alexander Collectors Dolls: Second Series, by Patricia Smith Like the previously mentioned book, Patricia Smiths Second Series contains mostly black-and-white photographs. However, the additional pictures and information make this book a valuable companion to the first book. This reference book is organized alphabetically, making it easier to find pictures of the doll you are looking for. Like its predecessor, however, this particular book is out of print, making it hard to find. Madame Alexander 2007 Collectors Dolls Price Guide, by Linda Crowsey Crowseys doll values guide is a must-have for any serious Madame Alexander collector. The book is released each year with updated values. The book is also illustrated with photographs of Madame Alexander dolls; although there are fewer pictures than the other reference books listed here, they are exchanged for new photographs in each edition, making it worthwhile to buy a new copy every year. American Character Dolls, By Judith Izen Reference books are plentiful for more well known dolls, but it can be difficult to find information on lesser-known companies. Thats why this book on American Character is so special. The book offers a chapter on each of the companys different dolls, complete with many detailed color photos. Revlon Dolls and Their Look-Alikes, by Kathy Barna Believe it or not, Barbie was nothing terribly original. There were a host of fashion dolls available for as long as ten years before Barbies debut, and these “pre-Barbie fashion dolls” are especially sought-after by collectors. Barnas reference book provides some of the best photographs Ive seen of pre-Barbie fashion dolls. The book focuses primarily on Miss Revlon and Little Miss Revlon, but also includes several chapters on competitors dolls of the era. Katharine Swan is a longtime doll collector and enthusiast. Also a freelance writer, she has written many articles on collecting and repairing vintage dolls. Lose Weight with 10,000 Steps A Day

By Jakob Culver In a quest to burn the extra calories, walking seems to be the easiest way. Experts have revealed that walking 10,000 steps a day can help you drop those unwanted pounds faster than just about any other method of weight loss. Not only that walking will also help you keep the weight off for a longer period of time as it builds your muscles while keeping your heart at a fat-burning rate. Quick facts about walking 10,000 steps Use a Pedometer: For counting the number of steps that you have covered the best approach is to have a pedometer which can help you easily keep track of the distance you have covered throughout your day as well as the number of steps that you have taken. (A pedometer is a small box-shaped calculator that you can clip to your belt or pants pocket in the same way you would wear a beeper.) While purchasing for a pedometer, doubly ensure that you select a model that has both distance and well as individual step readings. This will be helpful for you to learn how many steps go into one mile. You can increase steps to your count choosing the stairs over the elevator or walking to your colleague’s desk rather than sending an email. Calculate the Time it takes: Using either you pedometer or a counting method, calculate the approximate time it takes for you to traverse a specific distance, such as a mile. Calculate this number several times on several different days and average the figures together. You will then be able to determine approximately how long it will take you to walk a portion of your steps if you choose to spend a set amount of time walking them off. For example, if you know that you can walk all 10,000 steps in an hour, then you can elect to dedicate an hour everyday to walking your steps. But if spending 1 hr is not sufficient then break then you can add up increments of ten minutes at a time until you reach your goal. To break the monotony select two-three routes to follow, and do the measurement a Route Measure a route based on the time and distances it takes you to walk your 10,000 steps. Go for a long route for days when you have a surfeit of energy, a short route for days when you are tired, and a mid-length route for days when you are energized but busy. Masonic Lodge Tradition Failing

By Lance Winslow Masonic lodge tradition is failing in the United States and part of this is because the buildings are in a state of disrepair and many of the older gentleman who are running these groups are at the point where they will be dying soon and they do not have enough new blood in the group to carry them forward. As much as they have considered the passing of the torch from the good old boy networks in many of the thousands of cities and towns in our nation it is obvious that the Masonic lodges are indeed in decay and disrepair. But why is this happening? Well, it is happening because they misjudge the next generation and how to properly talk to them. It is happening because they wish to tell stories that are quite irrelevant to the next generation. It is happening because the Masonic lodge acts in secrecy and pretends to know some super secret. The up-and-coming generations have an inherent mistrust in large organizations and the governments. The next generation is not interested in what the Masonic lodge has to say because they are tired of being lied to and simply Assume that when may talk to an older gentleman from the Masonic lodge that they are filling them full of BS. If the Masonic lodge tradition is not carried forward into the next generation, then it will fail. They no longer have the political clout that they once had and the next generation perceives their tactics as underhanded, below society, secret trickery and rhetoric. The Masonic lodge tradition needs to adapt to modern times or they will pay the price of being passed by and become irrelevant to American society and civilization. The Masonic lodge tradition needs new marketing if it is to survive. And for all you gentleman in the Masonic lodge don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about, because I sure as hell do and you guys are screwing up and this might cause the end of a long tradition. You may have my advice if you wish it, but the ball is in your court now. Consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Conspiracy; Hundreds of Small Minority Owned Business Forced Into Closing By City of Tucson Attorney

By Steven Montes I am a Disabled American Veteran, with a minority owned business In Tucson, Arizona, I was the owner of Montes Orthopedic for over twenty years. In August of 2005, I was forced out of business by a corrupt city government that still discriminates against minorities and disabled American Veterans. My troubles began at the height of my career, when I was advertising on local TV. I was advertising my custom-made foot orthotic system that corrects the imbalance in a persons feet. This product allowed me to add small adjustments to the product over a period of time, which provided comfort to my elderly clients. As I began to become famous on TV, I was bombarded by the American Podiatric Board in Phoenix, Arizona. I was sent harsh and threatening letters, which demanded that I show up to their board of review to answer questions as to why I was practicing their type of medicine without a license. After hiring an attorney, who charged me $3500 up front for a retainer, I learned that this total action might cost $10,000. Unfortunately, I was unable to raise the rest of the money. However, after talking with friends, I was told that I did not need to attend the board meeting because I was not affiliated with their group, which therefore, had no supervision over me. Upon discovering this, I sent the board a letter which explained that I was not in violation of any of their by-laws, and that I was not going to attend the board meeting. Several months later, I received a letter from the City of Tucson Consumer Affairs Department, which was run by acting attorney Mr. Mike Anderson. It turns out that three of my clients had made complaints of my products over a three year period to the Better Business Bureau. Again, I had to pay an attorney to represent me at a deposition hearing I was told to attend. At the deposition my lawyer accused Mr. Anderson of launching frivolous actions against me. He said Mr. Anderson was abusing his authority, and stated that if I was brought to court again, he would counter-sue for damages and attorney fees. I did not hear from Mr. Anderson until the day after the death of my attorney. I then went through many depositions at a loss of time and money. I did not have adequate representation and went through several attorneys. Finally I found a good lawyer that sat with me at my deposition hearings, which were conducted by the now scorned Mr. Anderson. Having been victimized by Mr. Anderson, I was discussing my troubles with several friends. One of my friends told me that he knew Mr. Anderson through several other business owners. He stated that I was not alone, and that he had knowledge of Andersons office. He stated that Mike was randomly picking on minority owned businesses that had complaints documented with the Better Business Bureau. He also stated that Mike Anderson was responsible for the closure of hundreds of small business, where people have lost their homes, cars, and families due to Mike’s constant financial harassment of these business. I was also told that Mike was once a bailiff at the city courts for several years, and that he had studied to become a legal assistant. Once he had his certification, politicians in our city government placed him in this newly-formed department, where he was acting as a lawyer. I was also told that Mr. Anderson was involved in the conspiracy and closings of hundreds of small businesses all over town during his time at the City of Tucson Consumer Affairs Department. His strategy was to create a cash cow that extorts monies from the small minority business that generates income for the city courts, prosecutors, and judges, and Mike’s department. The second part of Mr. Andersons conspiracy was to eliminate these small business, and replace them with new business that would be expecting to pay greater city tax revenues, than minority business currently due presently. I decided to confront Mike at a regularly held deposition meeting. I accused him of fraudulent misconduct by his department. After several months of not hearing from him, I thought my problems were over. However, a customer told me that a neighbor she had referred to me had told her that she had called the Better Business Bureau and was told by this agency that I was under investigation for fraud by the city attorneys office. Also, all calls about Montes Orthopedic were being forwarded to Mike Anderson. The three complaints I had documented with the Better Business Bureau were very minimal, but I later learned that the number of complaints had now been raised to over thirty, due to Mr. Andersons fraudulent tactics. In preparation for a law suit with the City of Tucson, I hired a private detective to tape conversations with the Better Business Bureau. Now I had transcripts of the tapes for evidence in my case. I soon ended my fight to sue, due to a lack of funds from my declining business. Later when customers were told that I was under investigation, they called me to ask for their money. I told them that I was sorry that their confidence had been shaken by what the Better Business Bureau was saying about me. My only recourse was to say that Mr. Anderson was guilty of fraudulent schemes, conspiracy to commit fraud against minority own business, and that I had proof of his wrong-doing. I was still mad at the Better Business Bureau, so I called and made a complaint about their misconduct. I said that I would not be answering any more complaints, and that they should stop sending me any more complaints. In a further attempt to stop them, I threatened them with a law suit. To date, I have not received any more complaints, although my business is still listed with them as non-satisfactory. In looking for a cassation attorney, I called the National Bar Association look for a law firm to represent the many minority business that were forced out of business by the City of Tucson Attorneys Office. I was given a phone number at random in the City of San Diego, California. I was asked what the nature of my call was. After I had explained how I had been victimize by the City of Tucson Attorneys Office, the lady I was talking to said that she was shocked to hear this, because this conspiracy was now going on in the City of San Diego, California, and being directed towards minority owned business as well by their City Attorneys Office. I have the ladys contact information. Proof that there is conspiracy in my City of Tucson government. A City employee, nicked named Red & Speedy Gonzales, was a well liked employee. He was well known by his bosses, and supervisors to achieve fast and good work. When ever a supervisor had a emergency, leaking water pipe in a neighborhood, they asked Red to go fix it. He was called to fix small critical problems because of his speed, both on getting to the work job, and in repairing the what needed to be repaired. This City employee suffered from ADHD, which caused him an anxiety, which in turn caused him to be in a numerous amount of small accidents with his City truck in the yard and in other areas around town that had been assigned to him. These numerous amount of small accidents were common knowledge of most of his co-workers. Co-workers were aware of his consistent mishaps evolving his City truck and city equipment. On his way to an emergency repair job, Red was racing to the job site in his assigned city truck. While driving at a high rate of speed headed east on 22nd street, approaching Pantano Rd. In Tucson. He was suddenly faced with the problem of traffic that had backed up at the light. Due to the speed that he was traveling at, too and from jobs which earned him made him a favorite with several of his supervisors. But this one day while he was traveling at the high rate of speed, he was approaching the downward hill just before getting to the light, he suddenly noticed the backed up traffic at the light. He began to swerve, and break. Not able to control his city vehicle on his downward approach, he jumped the concrete median separating both sides of a 6 lane street, (3 lanes east & 3 lanes west) crashing head on into a car, killing 4 generations of women in one family. Infant girl, mother to infant girl & and daughter her mother, and grandmother. The City, quickly had the truck towed to their other compound for testing, and not the compound of origin, where a lot of the city employees would have spoke up about this mans bad driving record involving his truck , and city owned equipment. Testing reveled that it was break failure that lead to this accident. Once at the other compound, evidence was tamper with to prove there evidence in this case. The City of Tucson settled this case for a meager amount of money, which there attorney got almost half of the settlement. The amount for 4 lives was about a little over $ 300,000.00. The second part of this conspiracy was in the tampering of evidence. All records doctored to show what a good driver Red was, and conspiracy by our State Motor Vehicle Division, to tamper with this employees driving record was also done to protect this employee. Monies were given to this employee to disappear, and start a new life. In another separate case of conspiracy by the City of Tucson, was an incident that happened at the Water Department. On the south side of Tucson, a hole was dug to place a man-hole to reach pipes under the streets. Some kids were injured while playing, so an emergency call was reported to the Water Department. An older gentleman by the name of Mr. Valenzuela who was in charge of the compound tool shed, from where all hand tools such as gas weedeaters, gas lawn mowers, gas hedge trimmers, wheelbarrows, and other hand tools were dispensed daily to the crews in charge of maintenance around City of Tucson water well compounds. A head supervisor over the crews, and employees in the compound was looking for someone to operate the front end loader, and to go fill in the hole. After an excused search he could not find anyone qualified to operate the front end loader. So he ordered Mr. Valenzuela to take drive the heavy duty equipment out to that work site, even though Mr. Valenzuela had no prior knowledge of that equipment. An argument ensued over the use of the equipment, where Mr. Valenzuela was forced to get on the heavy duty equipment and drive across town to fill in the hole, or loose his job. Once he was at the work site, he proceeded to go down the steep embankment of the cannel where the front end loader flipped over and killed him. Immediately after his death, conspiracy to doctor records ensued, where the City of Tucson proved that Mr. Valenzuela had prior knowledge of equipment. Pre-administered dates, and signatures were placed on tests and forms certifying him as an operator of heavy duty equipment, he had mysteriously be promoted in addition prior to this incident to show proof of his experience with the equipment. This conspiracy carried over to the City of Tucson Finance Department to show his pay grade for his new promotion prior to his death. I am looking for an attorney to expose my City of Tucson Government and their fraudulent schemes. Please contact me if it is, or if you need more information about these allegations in my story. My State is currently showing a surplus of revenues in the amount of $ 850 million dollars, I feel that my State can afford to compensate all the people that have wrongfully hurt by both City, and State Government. After all it is at the misery of so many people that or State of Arizona has been able to show such a high surplus of monies, where other States are in debt. And are on the edge of facing bankruptcies. Like in San Diego, California. Please contact me if you can help at: smontes@scientist.com. Sacrificing Long Term Value Creation for Short Term Profits!

By Peter Kopitz In todays corporate environment, professional corporate finance needs are increasing steadily. Major factors include the capital markets need for transparency in financial reporting and increasingly strict regulatory requirements. The need to fully comply with regulatory requirements can have numerous significant implications for an organization. These include but are not limited to incurring large financial reporting cost, including investor communication and relations, constant pressure to meet reporting deadlines, and a lack of transparency of financial data and reporting processes. Nevertheless, the highest cost corporations have to pay is for the constant cat and mouse game to meet quarterly and annual projections. This constant pressure to increase short term profits hinders the company to achieve long-term growth and value creation. Too much money is spent on analyzing, monitoring, communicating, and adjusting forecasts, resulting that the organization is not able to quickly respond to its competitive environment and think in terms of long term value creation. It is vital for companies to realize that they have to weight the cost and benefits of these issues. Many companies are not up to the challenge and loose their competitive edge. They should always try not to sacrifice long term value creation for short term profits. Peter Kopitz is currently living in Bangkok, Thailand after graduating with Honors from the University Of Chicago Graduate School Of Business with a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He is actively involved in researching economic and political development in Thailand, focusing primarily on property development, security analysis and investment banking. Making Money With Give-Aways

By Ken Smith The guy who thought of giving away free rolls of film every time you have your films developed at his photo center - is a genius! You know the rest of the story, and so do thousands of other photo centers around the world who copy this excellent promotion. STRETCHING DOLLARS A budget conscious market is always out looking for a free lunch. For this reason, you can build a marketing system that self-liquidates its associated cost, distributing gift certificates that offer free this or free that - all the customer has to do is pay a minimal shipping and handling charge. FREE SOFTWARE In Las Vegas, I met a poker player who sells software he put together for $29 and higher. To double the volume and reach other markets, he decided to repackage his software. He gave it a new name, made a new disk label, and offered it at a ridiculous price: FREE To receive the software, all you have to do is fill out the gift certificate and send it back to him with $8.69 for shipping and handling. THEY WENT APE! He was giving the certificates to schools, businesses, and stores who give away the certificates as their own promotional gifts to their customers. Because the cost to produce and mail this disk is 60 cents, he was making $8 with every certificate that was redeemed for the free software. $800,000 IN 27 WEEKS Take a snapshot of this picture: Say, a total of 1 Million certificates were circulated. Let’s say you paid half a penny to print and distribute these million certificates. Your cost is $5,000. If you generate a 7% conversion, you’ll earn $560,000.00 NUMBERS GAME If you give other people permission to make copies of and give away your certificates, your cost to circulate 1 Million certificates will go down. But your opportunity to make money remains the same. 1% response = $80,000 2% response = $160,000 3% response = $240,000 5% response = $400,000 10% response = $800,000 THE INTERNET Now, if you do the same thing on the internet you will see similar results. One thing to note is that with the internet you dont have the cost of normal advertising and you have a vast array of advertising venues. Here are just a few of the advertising venues that can be utilized: Classified ads (free and paid) Pay per clicks (ie., Google adwords) Ezine advertising Co-op advertising Joint Venture advertising The possibilities are almost endless! Another point to consider about going the internet route is that you dont have to have an actual physical product to give away. Give ebooks, Special Reports, and the like that cost very little to produce or you can put the previously mentioned items on a CD and mail it to the prospect. If you plan to mail the item it should look very professional remember, your reputation is on the line. And last but certainly not least, your give away must have value, people do not want junk! Make sure your give away is valuable to the audience you have targeted. To Your Success, Ken Smith www.lessons4success.com www.powerteamsuccess.blogger.com I’m married and the father of Three. Cell Phone Plans Compared - Which Plan is Best For You

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Udo_Vieth]Udo Vieth Like most things in life, cell phone plans come in various shapes and sizes. With the correct information, you can pick the correct one for you. The following criteria will make it easier for you to choose the best and most efficient plan for your needs. Ask yourself some questions before making a commitment. 1. When will you mostly use the phone? During the day, after hours, all the time. 2. How many minutes a day will you spend talking on the phone? 3. Will the phone be used as my primary means of communication, or as a supplement to a fixed line? 4. Will you need to contact overseas numbers on a regular basis? 5. How long are you prepared to commit to one service provider? 6. Where in the country will the phone be used? 7. What features do you need on your phone? Having a clear understanding of the above, makes it easier to choose a plan that fits your lifestyle and budget. Monthly Plans Always verify what the time commitment is, when you are comparing cell phone plans. The majority of providers will offer a minimum 12 months contract, basically locking you in for that time with their service plan. The choice of actual provider is best made by weighing up a balance of coverage area, cost per call or minute and the equipment offered. The higher cost plans are usually cheaper per call if you use the phone a lot. They also offer better equipment, mostly for free to go with your plan. So always first check out everything that is on offer before deciding, as you will have to live with it for a while. Look at special features incorporated into the contract as well. Some sellers provide rollover minutes, per second billing etc etc. These additional features may indeed be of great value to you. Prepaid Plans These are designed for people with special needs or circumstances. Generally they do not require a credit check, or minimum monthly income as is the case with the monthly contracts. There are plans that do not incorporate a phone, enabling you to use a phone that you may already own. The cost per minute is usually higher than with a monthly cell phone contract as well. This makes this type of connection really only economically suitable for low usage callers. Prepaid cell phone plans can however save you a lot of money, if you are a casual user only. The main advantage is that you are not caught up in minimum monthly contract charges. Also, since there is no contract, you can stop paying whenever you wish, and resume when you require a phone again. The only downfall is a probable reconnection and setting up charge. If you have a bad credit history, or a non fixed income, this may however be a useful option. For budgeting purposes, you are also limiting your total expenses, as you cannot go over the amount you have already paid. You may of course top this up, and carry on using your phone. This feature gives you a lot more control over your monthly expenditure. All in all, different plans have different advantages and disadvantages. Your lifestyle, financial circumstances and personal desires dictate the precise plan ideally suited to you. Take the time to evaluate your needs first. Then look at the plans on offer. You will make a wiser and more cost effective choice in your cell phone plan that way. For more other little known cellphone information go to the best cell phone tips now! Natural Born Pest Killers - Home Remedies for Pest Control

By Eric Vinje Not everybody likes cucumbers. You may be interested to learn that ants hate cucumbers, especially cucumber peels. You’ll especially appreciate that fact if you want to get rid of them. Just spread some cucumber peels - the more bitter, the better - where ants enter your home and they should get the message. Consider cucumber the “anti-welcome” mat for ants. Cucumbers are one example of natural pest control. It’s using natural and generally non-toxic ingredients to repel or get rid of pests including ants, wasps, mites, moths, flies and other insects. People are slicing up cucumbers instead of spraying Bug-Be-Gone because they don’t want toxic chemicals in their homes or in their garden sheds. There is growing evidence that synthetic pesticides pose a health risk to humans and animals. Here at Planet Natural, we have a whole slew of natural pest controls, including Orange Guard ($8.95) which uses d-limonene, or orange peel extract, to control insect pests; Safer BioNeem ($12.95), which uses the active ingredient of neem oil - azadirachtin - to kill insects before they become biting or reproducing adults; as well as a variety of traps including the Disposable Yellow Jacket Trap ($4.95) and Apple Maggot Trap ($15.95). For those willing to invest some time and effort at crafting their own remedies, we’ve gone on to list a variety of remedies to help you battle pests on the home front and in your garden. Barriers act like barbed wire to keep crawling pests, such as ants, out. These include garlic - grind it up with water and apply - cayenne pepper, cinnamon, powdered charcoal, bone meal, talcum powder or chalk. Keep in mind that different pests have different aversions, so you’ll have to see what substance works best with the ones trying to sneak into your home. Another way to think of barriers is to grow certain plants around the periphery of your home. They not only look nice, but will also deter pests. Plants known to repel ants and aphids include: spearmint, peppermint and pennyroyal. You can use the same trick for fly control. Just substitute the above plants with mint and basil which repel flies, but smell good to humans. Boiling water is excellent for ant control or if you see where they are creeping into your house, squeeze some lemon into the hole or crack. Barriers also work for snails. They dislike sand, lime, copper or ashes, so use these borders to keep snails away. Baking soda and powdered sugar mixed in equal parts is a good roach killer. Just spread around the area where you see roaches and soon you won’t see them anymore. (Boric Acid, while slightly more toxic, is naturally occurring and is another way to get rid of them.) Here’s a really sneaky way to get rid of fire ants. (All’s fair in love and the war against insect pests.) The only way to get rid of an infestation is to assassinate the queen. Wait until a dry spell is about to end. Sprinkle instant grits on the fire ant hill. The workers will carry the grits to the queen for her royal meal. She’ll eat the grits and when it rains, she’ll drink. And that’s what will kill her. The grits will expand in her stomach and she’ll “bloat” to death. Once she’s out of the way, the leaderless ants will die off. (This suggestion came courtesy of the Tightwad Gazette II book.) Cloves smell better than moth balls and are a natural deterrent against winged pests. You can also create a water trap by filling a small basin with water and leaving a night light suspended over it. Moths will be attracted to the light and will end up crashing and burning and falling into the water. Add a little dish soap to break the surface tension of the water. Corn Gluten Meal may not sound very appetizing, but it’s a natural, preemptive strike against weeds. Apply it early in the spring before weeds sprout. Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of the corn milling process and is a natural fertilizer. Diatomaceous earth is made up of the fossilized remains of diatoms, single-cell organisms. The glass-like nature of diatomaceous earth makes it one of the oldest forms of insecticide. The sharp surfaces cut through the insect cuticle and the insect dies of dehydration. Diatomaceous earth kills earwigs, ants and box elder bugs. Since it’s non-discriminate when it kills, be sure to only apply it just to the ground surface where you think insects are overstaying their welcome. Grind rosemary leaves into a fine dust and sprinkle it onto your pet or its bedding to ward off fleas. Ivory liquid dishwashing detergent can act as a natural insecticide. Dilute with water until it is a 1 or 2 percent solution and then spray on plants. Need neem oil? Neem oil - made from guess what? - neem seeds, prevents fungus growth, and repels and kills insects, including mites. While it fights many scourges, it’s nontoxic to birds, mammals and most beneficial insects. One word of caution - it can sometime affect bees so use it as a spot treatment to minimize contact. Neem oil is usually sold in a concentrated form, to which you add water. Fruit flies are wine connoisseurs. Okay, maybe they are not wine snobs, but they have been known to quaff a few drops here or there. They particularly like Chardonnay or so we hear. Use that knowledge to your advantage: fill up a saucer of some cheap white wine and add a little detergent to it. Leave it around for the flies to sip and die on. This solution brings knew meaning to the expression “rot gut.” A natural fly catcher related to wine is to put something sickly sweet like mango peels in the bottom of narrow-necked wine bottles. The flies can fly in, but can’t fly out. You can even make your own fly paper. Boil water, sugar and corn syrup together. Spread the extra-sticky mixture on brown paper grocery bags and voila you have your own fly paper which will trap flies. For mosquito control the aged old custom of burning citronella candles will help repel the pesky critters. To get rid of slugs and snails, invert a flower pot near a shady plant. Use a stick to prop up the flower pot or place on irregular ground - whatever will give enough of an entrance way for slugs and snails. They will crawl under the rim to avoid the heat. Check the flower pot at the end of the day and remove the slugs and snails. Vinegar is a great herbicide. Fill a spray bottle with vinegar - white is best since it won’t stain, you certainly don’t want to use expensive, aged Balsamic vinegar on weeds - and spray the vinegar on your unwelcome flora on your porch, patio or back yard. It’s one of the few things that will work against noxious weeds such as Canadian Thistle. All vinegars are diluted, so try and buy the highest concentration you can at the supermarket. Using organic lawn fertilizers will not only keep it green, it will make it healthy and more equipped to defend itself against weeds and pests. Organic fertilizers, such as bat guano, grass clippings, alfalfa meal, fish emulsion and worm castings, work well. While natural pest control products are a step up from most commercial insecticides, you should still be restrained about using them. Don’t just leap at something that cures the symptom - look for the underlying or root cause and seek a solution for that problem. Overuse can end up creating new problems - getting rid of one pest in exchange for another. That said, natural pest control can be a great non-toxic solution to keeping your garden and home pest free. This article was written by Eric Vinje of Planet Natural.
